M F Husain is India’s most celebrated and internationally renowned painter of all times. Maqbool Fida Husain (born 1915 died 2011) was known as the Picasso of India. A self-taught artist, Husain was a prolific painter known for his various series including: Gaja Gamini, British Raj, depiction of Hindus gods & goddesses, Mother Teresa, Indian Civilization, Islam, Horses etc. Besides being a hugely successful artist M F Husain was also a Film maker and Director; known for ‘Gaja Gamini’ with actress Madhuri Dixit as the lead and ‘Meenaxi: A tale of three cities’ with Tabu. In 1967 Husain received the National Film Award for Best Experimental Film for Through The Eyes of a Painter and a Gold Bear Award for the same movie at the Berlin Film Festival. M F Husain’s paintings have been auctioned for record-breaking amounts at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Saffron.

Jam Depar is a painter and sculptor. Senior faculty at Department of Fine Art at Center of Excellence in Art and Design MUET Jamshoro. Jam Depar’s interest in materials and nature has made him produce sensitive wooden figure based sculptures deeply rooted in culture. The artist first exhibited his work at Indus Gallery and worked closely with the late master artist Bashir Mirza or BM where he learnt painting from him before joining the National College of Arts. Jam Depar’s sculptures are mainly of wood and clay.

Kiran Saeed has a Masters in Visual Arts (MA hons.) from the National College of Arts, Lahore. She studied miniature as an undergrad at the NCA in 2004. Kiran has participated in several group and solo exhibitions locally and internationally, including at Unicorn Gallery Karachi and Unicorn Space Dubai etc. Her new work is part of the series ‘Utopia’. The artist has been an external juror to the Third year Miniature dept., NCA. Kiran Saeed’s work is in private collections. She is an art Professor/Faculty member at Kinnaird College for Women.

Mizna is a recipient of the Principal’s Honors Awards and Merit Scholarships at the NCA. Currently she is faculty, Fine Arts Department at Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore. Her contemporary miniatures are inspired by domestic life, culture, identity, feminism and human relationships.

Aqeel Solangi is an imaginative painter of nature and explores themes of time and memory and works in various mediums including painting, drawing and sculpture. He has been exhibiting nationally and internationally. Aqeel graduated with a BFA with honors in 2003 and MA (Hons.) Visual Art in 2005, both from NCA, Lahore. He was the recipient of NCA/Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust Art Bursary for the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, London in 2006 as well as Young Talent Award by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts in 2006. He teaches at the National College of Arts, Rawalpindi.

Born in Antibes, France in 1943 Jean Claude Novaro is today recognized as one of the greatest glass blowers of our time. His unique and distinctive art-glass creations are highly prized and sought after by art connoisseurs world-wide.
Jean-Claude Novaro’s works are in museums, galleries and private collections. Novaro’s hard-earned skills and artistic genius, combined with an unwavering drive and determination have made Jean-Claude one of the premier glass artists
in the world. In his professional life, Novaro has achieved several records. He has also integrated layers of 24cts gold and photoluminescent pigment inside the glass. He has experienced uninterrupted success as a solo glass artist.

Syed Hasan Askari was born on 29 December 1907 at Jhansi in India. From 1926 to 28 he studied at the Government School of Art and Craft in Lucknow. From 1935 to 39 Askari studied in London at the Royal College of Art under Sir William Rothenstein. Upon his return he painted large murals and portraits, his artworks were purchased by the Nawabs of the day, ruling princes, governors, ministers, presidents and high officials and their wives.

Syed Hasan Askari was one of the group of Academic Realists whose pioneer was Raja Ravi Varma of Travancore (India) who first began Western style oil painting in India. When Askari began his art career in the late 20s, the well-established academic realists were Atul Bose and Hemen Majumdar. Among his contemporaries Askari admired Gangoli and Lal Kaka, both Bengali artists. Askari also taught art in India and the U.K. Amongst his students was Lady Halett who was married to Sir Morrie Halett (Governor of the United Provinces in India).

During the forty years of his artistic career, Askari must have painted many hundreds of paintings including that of: Queen Nur Jehan, wife of Emperor Jahangir, done in 1932, Princess Roshan Ara, daughter of Emperor Aurangzeb, painted in 1960. The other portraits represent Jodha Bai, wife of Emperor Akbar, Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Emperor Shah Jehan, Zeenat Mahal, wife of Emperor Aurangzeb. Portraits of Jahan Ara, daughter of Shah Jehan, and two of Princess Zebunnissa, daughter of Aurangzeb – painted between the years 1932 to 1957.

S H Askari died in the year 1969.

Rarely, if ever, are his paintings available in resale. This still-life is an exquisite traditional painting available exclusively at Unicorn Gallery.

Unicorn Gallery is pleased to present on 20th November 2014 an exhibition of modern miniature paintings by today’s leading miniature artists.

MAJOR MINIATURISTS features new miniature art by: Amjad Ali Talpur, Asif Ahmed, Attiya Shaukat, Ayesha Durrani, Imran Channa, Imran Mudassar, Irfan Hasan, Khadim Ali, Khalid Saeed Butt, Mudassar Manzoor, Raza Ur Rehman, Safdar Ali Qureshi, Saira Wasim, Ustad Bashir Ahmed, and Waseem Ahmed.

Exhibition opening time: 5 pm to 8 pm. Display shall last from 20th to 30th November 2014.

Amjad Ali Talpur trained in miniature from the National College of Arts, Lahore. He teaches and practices at Jamshoro Sindh and his grid miniatures explore themes of country, culture, history, mughal and Islamic identity. The artist exhibited internationally.

Asif Ahmed graduated from National College of Art in 2004 with a BFA 1st Division, Distinction in Miniature Painting. The artist has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Pakistan and abroad. His modern miniatures explore traditional art, political intrigue, power and blending history with the modern. Asif Ahmed’s miniatures have been auctioned internationally and featured in several publications.

Attiya Shaukat has a BFA in Fine Arts from National College of Arts as well as from the Lahore College of Women. Through her work she explores her personal narrative. Having suffered paralysis, the artist highlights images of spines, vertebrae and mechanical parts. Attiya uses the age-old tradition of miniature painting and incorporates it into modern context.

Ayesha Durrani is a modern miniaturist. She graduated in 2003 from the National College of Arts with a BFA. Ayesha has held several international exhibitions including at Aicon Gallery New York and Gallery 27 Cork Street, London, Dubai, New Delhi etc. Ayesha Durrani draws out feminist topics through her work exploring themes of female bondage and arranged marriages in Pakistani culture.

Imran Channa is a contemporary artist who works in various media including: Painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art and interactive art. He has been exhibiting nationally and internationally. He has a BFA and an MFA from the National College of Arts and his work ‘Making of the history’ is based on Mughal culture, heritage and identity. Imran Channa was Gasworks resident UK.

Imran Mudassar has Bachelors in Fine Arts with a Distinction from National College of Arts, and was awarded the Award of Excellence by Alhamra Art Gallery, Lahore. He has shown in Art Hong Kong (2010), “Assemble Reassemble”, Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi (2010). He has completed a residency at the Visual Art Collective (Khoj International Artists Residency), Banglore, and has had two solo exhibitions in Pakistan as well as participating in various group shows.

Irfan Hasan graduated from National College of Arts in 2006 and has been a part of several major exhibitions internationally. The artist is well known for his large scale socio-political miniatures. Irfan Hasan is the recipient of Commonwealth Connection International Artist Residency 2010.

Khadim Ali is a miniaturist par-excellence. Based in Sydney, Australia, Khadim belongs to the Hazara tribe and his miniatures explore themes of culture. Khadim uses the technique of neem rang or half-colour and is best known for his Rustam series narratives which depicts the battle between good and evil, and the Persian epic poem, Shahnameh (Book of kings). Khadim is an internationally renowned artist and has participated in the Venice Biennale, shown at Documenta 13, Cross Art Projects, Sydney, Lismore Regional Gallery, Australia.

Khalid Saeed Butt has a BFA in Graphic Design from Punjab University; his miniatures are executed on canvas with mixed media and some with gouache on wasli. His watercolour wash technique brings him closer to Chughtai and his longish figures echo Western academic drawing. His work is largely inspired by Urdu poetry in context and is traditional in nature. The artist enjoys immense popularity in his country.

Mudassar Manzoor has a Professional Diploma in Computer Graphics from Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan (2001) and Bachelor of Fine Arts First Division with Distinction, National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan (2005). Mudassar Manzoor is a well-known artist from Pakistan, having shown at prominent exhibitions internationally, and has mastered Eastern Miniature painting. He paints details using animal hair (as delicate paint brush), meticulously applying gouache paint and gold pigment on to wasli paper. The artist has shown at Hong Kong Art Center and the 4th Biennial of Contemporary Paintings of Muslim World in Iran.
Raza Ur Rehman has worked as a designer (comic and digital artist) and as an illustrator with various local and multinational companies. He has a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts (Illustration) from College of Art & Design University of the Punjab Lahore in 2008. The artist works as a lecturer and has won a Merit Award from the Artist Association of the Punjab. Raza has held successful showing at the Unicorn Gallery Karachi.

Safdar Ali Qureshi graduated from the National College of Arts in 2005. Born in Larkana, Sindh, he is currently a visiting faculty member teaching miniature painting at the Centre of Excellence in Arts Design, MUET, Jamshoro. Safdar Ali Qureshi’s work involves a revival of traditional skills with the experimentation of contemporary viewpoints and technology.

Saira Wasim is a leading modern miniaturist. The artist graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore. Her miniatures explore politics and culture and her work has been exhibited in a number of international museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Asian Art Museum. Saira Wasim’s paintings have been auctioned at major international auction houses and her work has been published by VOGUE India.
Ustad Bashir Ahmed Bashir Ahmed was born in 1953 and was the department head of miniature department at the National College of Arts in Lahore. A distinguished artist Professor Bashir Ahmed has been a traditional miniature artist working in the original Persian and Mughal miniature techniques and training generations of modern miniaturists.

Waseem Ahmed Waseem Ahmed is a modern miniaturist based in Gerrmany. Born in Hyderabad, Pakistan (1976) Waseem graduated from National College of Arts in 2000 with “Honors” in the field of Miniature Painting. He mixes Mughal tradition, fusing it with modern elements and through his work he comments on contemporary socio-political events. Waseem has participated in several solo and group shows all over the world. His work has also been auctioned in prestigious auction houses internationally.

Unicorn Gallery is pleased to present on 10th December 2014 a retrospective exhibition of the late Master artist Laila Shahzada – a pioneer of modern art painting in Pakistan.

LAILA SHAHZADA RETROSPECTIVE (1926-1994) is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Pakistani Master artist Laila Shahzada on her twentieth death anniversary and features paintings from various series such as ‘Driftwood’, ‘Mohenjo-Daro’, ‘Skardu mountains’ – over a period of decades.

This event has been sponsored by SEED Ventures managed by Phenomena By Pomme and supported by Oxford University Press.

Exhibition opening time: 5 pm to 8 pm. Display shall last from 10th to 30th December 2014.

Laila Shahzada was born in 1926 in the U.K. She was one of Pakistan’s most internationally renowned artists; One of the first women painters in Pakistan to gain international recognition with exhibitions around the world including Pakistan, London, Paris, Tokyo, Monte Carlo and New York. During her lifetime her work was shown at the prestigious Pasadena museum. She was awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz by the government of Pakistan in 1984 and the Pride of Performance in 1995. Laila was awarded the “Key to the City” of New York — the only Pakistani to receive this award. Her paintings are in the collection of every major art collector and Pakistan’s most distinguished old families. Posthumously Pakistan Post honoured the artist along with ten other masters with collector’s item rare stamps of the artist and their work. Several publications feature information on the artist and a biography is available in the form of the Foundation for Museum of Modern Art and Oxford University Press joint venture publication ‘Laila Shahzada – Exploring an Inner Landscape’ by Salwat Ali. Laila Shahazada’s paintings have auctioned at major international auction houses including: Sotheby’s, Bonhams, Christie’s and Artnet.

Syed Faraz Ali graduated from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi in 2005. He is deeply interested in politics and society and through his art, Faraz comments on consumerism and commercialisation. The artist’s style is pop art and works in a variety of media. He has held several exhibitions and is currently completing a Masters in Fine Arts degree in Australia.

Soraya Sikander

Soraya Sikander is a painter and sculptor. Soraya graduated from Beaconhouse National University Lahore in 2008, and went on to study at UCL’s Slade School of Fine Art, and London Atelier of Representational Art. She has participated in a number of group shows internationally and solo exhibitions. Soraya Sikander paints still-life, calligraphic landscapes and cityscapes. The artist is best known for her exhibition series ‘In, at and around’ and is a TEDx speaker. Her work has been featured in HELLO! magazine.

Murtaza Bashir (Born in 1932, Dhaka) is a Bangladeshi master artist. The artist received his formal art training trained in 1949-54: Govt. Institute of Arts (at present Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University), Dhaka, 1954 : Teachers’ Training Certificate (Art Appreciation) Course at Asutosh Museum, University of Calcutta, India, 1956-57 : Academia di Belli- arti, Florence, Italy in Painting & 1957-58 in Fresco
1971-73 : Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux- arts, Paris, France in Mosaic and Academie Goetz, Paris in 1972-73 in Etching and Aquatint.

An early modernist, the artist has an art career spanning over five decades. Between the years  1949 and 2007 Murtaza Bashir lived and worked in Dhaka, Chittagong, Kolkata, Florence, Karachi, Lahore, Paris, Santa Fe, London and Cairo. Since 1954 Bashir has contributed to many art exhibitions in Dhaka and in the U.S. and Europe, Russia, Pakistan etc. His work is in the private collections worldwide as well as museum and other public collections. Murtaza Bashir is an eminent South Asian painter, he enjoys wide popularity amongst serious collectors.
